Prometheus Unending

You think yourself a god among men
That walks unchallenged on the fertile dirt of the one true creator
If they call you monster or spawn of Samael
What womb do I call my own?

Under a bruised horizon with open sores
That expels the tears of Heaven’s gate
I am reborn by flash of light
You scream of life and I arise.

At the first illumination of morning
I feel first touch
I taste first taste
I smell first smell.

These senses that form
Rushed through my veins unfamiliar
In context of cortex
I think only of future engagements, never what has been.

A single gaze upon your handiwork
Of yellowed eyes and frightful height
Of translucent skin and hideous feature
Causes you: my father; my mother; my teacher; my friend to flee.

Yellowed eyes find solace in yellowed pages
Of classic literature both fresh and aged
As I wait for the moment in my new life
To confront you.

You call me son
I call you father
God calls you Victor Frankenstein
God calls me your creation.

Falling fractals plummet from the sky

Falling fractals plummet from the sky
Within each white flake just a memory,
Snow that shines brightly as each blue eye
As both raindrop and composure cease to be;
Each breath I take a gaseous cloud
That morphs shape to suit surrounding,
Each note of your voice beautiful; soft or loud
As the icy conditions keep the heart pounding;
The winds howl around me, slowing me down
When I spot the mirage in the snowstorm,
I press further on so as not to drown
As the bright gold of your hair keeps me warm;
Then the snow melts away and out comes the sun
When you smile at me and I am no longer stunned.

Return to the Plastic Utopia

Twisted metal and shapeless form;
From thou appendages do we adorn.
Jungle gym.

Downward tumble and quickening pace;
Land on your feet, not on your face.
Slide.

Soaring seats and skyward bound;
Glide through the air, high above the ground.
Swings.

One flies up and one falls down;
From equal sides comes a laughing sound.
Seesaw.

Squeaking rubber and players short and tall;
Miss your shot and the ball will fall.
Basketball court.

Wooden frame and a rocking spring;
This mighty steed can do anything.
Spring rider.

I come back to the playground of my youth.

I return to the plastic utopia.

The Night, Cold

The night, cold.

The blanket, warm.

The bed, comfortable.

The sleep pants, scratchy.

The pillow, soft. No, the pillow, hard.

The ability to sleep, impossible.

The time, 2:43 p.m.

The event, every night.

The event, the same time.

The window, locked.

The glass, reinforced.

The gun next to the bed, loaded.

The monster, outside.

The monsters fangs, enormous and stained.

The monsters eyes, yellow.

The monsters fur, black.

The monsters claws, long.

The fear inside me, in my throat.

The monster, growling softly.

The monsters claws, scratching the window softly.

The window, screaming.

The monster, silent.

The moon, missing.

The monster, calculating.

The victim, me.
The victim, frightened.

The window, suddenly unlocked.

The window, suddenly opened.

The monster, in my room.

The gun, on the other side of the room.

The monster, tall.

The victim, small.

The monster, roaring.

The victim, standing.

The monster, ready to pounce.

The victim, fearless.

The monster, attacks.

***

The morning, arriving.

The time, passed.

The neighbor, worried.

The police, called.

The police, arrived.

The police, investigate.

The victim, dead.

The victim, depressed.

The victim, suicidal.

The pictures on the wall, of a monster.

The monsters fangs, enormous and stained.

The monsters eyes, yellow.

The monsters fur, black.

The monsters claws, long.

The caption on every picture, death.

The victim, tormented by nightmares.

The victim, unable to cope.

The cause of death, suicide.

The case, closed.

The skeptic neighbor, unsure of result.

The neighbor and the victim, friends since childhood.

The single piece of evidence, uncovered at crime scene.

The evidence, fur.

The fur, black.

The victim, no pets.

The monster, real?

Underland

When I cannot hear
my neighborhoods screams of
car horns, gunshots and barking,
I think.

I think about who is honking
the car horns, and if they are okay.
If they got into a car accident,
are they bleeding, are they hurt?

I think about who the gun is firing at
and if I'll ever hear the sirens
of an ambulance
coming to save them.

I think about the dog, who is always barking,
who is always outside,
even if it's very hot and even if it's very cold.
I think maybe death and other diseases are eying that dog.

At least
that's what the nuns at the church whisper to each other.
I don't think that's true, though,
but only because Papa said diseases don't have eyes.

When I think about my neighborhood,
I think about a story my friend Magdalene told me once,
about a little girl the same age we are now
who fell down a rabbit hole and went into a different world.

The world had
talking animals and people made of cards and
wacky tea parties and other crazy things.
I think it was called Underland.

Everything in Underland
was upside down,
like how my neighborhood is
from the rest of the world.

Paulette and Bianca from Sunday school said
that I live in a ghetto
with the rest of the poor people,
but I didn't know what that meant.

I asked Mama if me and her
and Papa and James and Grannie
were poor,
and if we lived in the ghetto.

She said of course not
Reba
where did you get that idea?
I asked then if we were living in Underland like the girl in the book.

Mama smiled at me and said that we were
like the girl in Underland,
and that as soon as the world quit being upside down,
they would join us in being right side up.

Grim Reaper

God watches over as protector, but not seeing all.

Rats still stalk the hallways of Heaven.

Intent on fulfilling a simple contract.

Master doesn’t like failure.

R
apid fire.

Everyone falls in front of the bullets.

Always waiting to claim the next victim.

Present anywhere, anytime, as anything.

Eyes watching like predator hunting prey.

Ready to strike.

Man Verses Temptation

Adam

“It is so red and juicy,

This fruit is a delight,

Would God really care if we took a quick bite?”

Serpent

“Listen to temptation,

Would it ever lead you astray?

He just sits in Heaven, making rules up all day.”

Eve

“Serpent, though thoughtful,

How do we know

If you aren’t of fire, deep down below?”

“If I was of cinder,

Of ash, or of flame,

Why would I be here, in this place void of pain?”

“You seem to speak the truth

My fellow child of God,

Come and join us, do not hang there so odd!”

“I am afraid I cannot eat

That food so divine,

I will spoil myself, when night falls, I dine.”

“Dear Adam, what if we eat,

And He doesn’t pardon,

But instead throws us out, right out of the garden?”

“Sweet Eve, you were once of

The same vein as this fruit,

But when I claimed you, He did not dare give me the boot.”

“Eat, dear friends,

The gift once so forbidden,

Do it quickly, before he sees you, while you are hidden!”

“Why must we eat

Under the shadow of the tree,

I thought you were as holy as He?”

“Precious Eve!

You should really try this wonderful meal,

It is the most heavenly thing my mouth ever did feel!”

“It is a shame you have left the sunshine,

And welcomed the rain,

For I have tricked you! I am of the darkest domain!”

“No! Adam, we have forsaken

God’s singular rule!

We have eaten the fruit, how I feel like a fool!”

“What will we do?

How can we run from the thunder

Of the gathering storm from our one fatal blunder?”

“Flawed creations!

Nothing can be done

To hide from the one who gave you the sun!”

“You menace!

Why trick those of His holy place,

Why not torture the souls right in front of your face?”

“How bored I do get

From ruling the dark,

But to torture His beings: oh my! What a lark!”

“Leave us be

You creature most foul,

Go back to your home of Earth’s deepest bowel!”

“Very well, poor children,

Though prepare to cower in fear

To face the consequences of your actions here!”

“O’ my beautiful companion,

I wish this a fib!

I wish I was alone, I wish you were my rib!”

“To spare thee

Of most certain doom,

I’d rather I leave Eden, and face the gloom!”

“Perhaps, sweet Eve,

There is another way,

Maybe man will still thrive for another day.”

“I wish you right, gentle Adam,

For I see the stairs

From the kingdom of Heaven, they are present, they are there!”

“Take my hand, perfect creature,

I see Him descending,

Let us pray for mercy, our damage needs mending.”

“To face our punishment

Our sins need atoned,

Let us brace ourselves for life among the unknown.”

Suddenly, Intrusion

Warmth.

Darkness.

No sense of urgency.

Time has slowed.

Suddenly, intrusion.

Spindly claws grab for me.

I scream.

The claws reach further.

They grab me.

I am taken into another world.

Bright lights.

Beeping.

I wail for comfort.

Find none.

“It’s a girl.”

***

The monster grabs me under my arms.

Force me to stand.

I wobble, cry for her to stop.

She keeps going.

We repeat.

Flung into air.

Straddled under arms.

Wail.

Wobble.

Fall.

Finally, I stand.

“Stu, come quick! Emily’s walking!”

***

I feel my mouth.

Tongue.

Across mouth.

Tiny things in my mouth.

White.

Square.

I chew.

“Look’s like Daddy’s little girl got her first tooth!”

***

Something.

Tickling my throat.

I know what to say.

Do not know how.

Then, I speak.

“Ma-ma.”

***

I am three.

I speak, I walk, I chew.

But no more.

The beam shines on me.

I raise into the sky.

The vortex swallows me.

I look.

Bright lights, strange whispers.

Little men, green.

Large eyes, black.

I was abducted ten years ago.

I was forty.

They wanted to know.

Humans.

I become another test.

Others stare.

The animal-men, the hybrids.

The living head.

Some have worse fate.

I live now as baby.

Forever.

They do tests on me.

I do nothing to stop.

How can I?

They zap me again.

The beam wipes my memory.

My existence.

***

Warmth.

Darkness.

No sense of urgency.

Time has slowed.

Suddenly, intrusion.

This Is All For Sue: A Story Told in Haiku

Author's Note: This story was accepted for publication, and was published in the Spring 2014 issue of "Flip the Page", a publication of Thurber House, of the great American author, James Thurber.

I wake with a start

From an innocent dreamland.

My head’s killing me.

I have a hangover.

I played at a bar last night

And got really drunk.

I wipe drool away

From the corners of my mouth

And slip on a shirt.

The couch I slept on

Was really comfortable,

Much more than my van.

The girl’s name is Sue.

She is just my type of girl:

Quiet and brunette.

She said she’s a fan

And it would be an honor

For me to crash there.

After my music,

She offered a place to stay

Because it was cold.

A low in the tens?

It was just too cold for me

To sleep in my van.

I accepted it

And I slept on her warm couch

For many hours.

As I looked around,

I noticed the room was weird.

It had changed since night.

Once a living room,

It changed into a dungeon

And I was trapped there.

I tried to get up

I was chained to the stone wall

And could not get out.

Suddenly, Sue’s here.

She says she loves me

And my music too.

She loves my lyrics

And my rhythm and my rhyme

She wants me to stay.

“Forever”, she says,

“You can write poetry

And sing me the words.

“You can play guitar

Sweetly like you do always

And love me for good .”

With no other choice,

I agreed to her strict terms

And now I’m trapped there.

I write songs for Sue

I write poems for her and

I write haikus.

However, there was

a condition to my life:

Write only for her.

She has threatened me

With harm if I contact help

From the outside world.

Judging from the pics

Of men all over the wall,

She’s done it before.

The dog probably

Took care of the ones she no

Longer loved anymore.

Hopefully I’m loved

Much longer and more than the

Others she has kept.

Sleep doesn’t matter

The music doesn’t matter

Only Sue matters.

This isn’t for me,

This isn’t for the police,

This is all for Sue.

The Veteran's Lament

Author's Note: This poem was published in the 2014 issue of Shades, the Columbus Alternative High School magazine.

Crouched in the mud,

Dirt in our mouth and eyes,

We would talk about our lives before the war.

One was a young father, one was a teacher,

One was a teenager barely nineteen,

His ache for his parents still sore.

We would talk about the girls we had been with,

The books we had read,

The classes we had taken at school.

The teacher was educated,

The father was quiet,

The teenager as pale as a ghoul.

As we fought bloody battles

And watched brave men fall,

Many supported the idea.

One that fighting the war

Was truly a lost cause

Against the juggernaut called North Korea.

Clutching our guns close to our chests,

We knew it would keep us safe

And protected.

It would save us from harm,

From the boogeyman of war,

Who was always ready to claim those infected.

He would take them away,

In his dark, cold fingers,

He would take away our comrades and friends.

He would never let go,

He was always stalking,

Ready to snatch us from right around the bend.

So we would talk about things,

Trying to keep our minds off of

The horrors of the terrible place we were in.

We would talk about anything,

Love, loss, friendship

And trying to save ourselves from sin.

One time we sat,

Crouched in our familiar positions

And we spoke about the feeling of death.

About the level of pain we would feel,

About what would happen after

We would die and take our last breath.

The teacher said nothing would happen,

There would be no bright light

Or great, awe-inspiring ascension.

The father said you would either go up

To the kingdom of Heaven

Or go down to the deep dark dimension.

The teenager had said,

He was wasn’t quite sure

What would happen when you keel over and expire.

He questioned the need of a God

Or a Satan,

What if the Bible was simply a liar?

Now this is just me talking,

He had said over the rain,

The raindrops clinging to his brow.

But what if death is just an empty void

Of darkness, of nothingness,

Ready to swallow us when allowed?

The four of sat there quietly then,

Thinking of

What the teenager had said.

Could it be true?

Could we fall into darkness

Once we passed away and were dead?

Hold on I said then,

And everyone got silent

I was ready to finally clear the air.

They all looked at me then,

The teacher, the father,

The teenager with rain in his hair.

Before I die I said then,

Looking at everyone’s face

I want to live my life to the full extent.

I want to get married,

Raise a couple of children,

Go to barbecues and pay the rent.

I truly don’t care

What death is like now,

It is far away from us here.

We’re going to survive this war

Go back to our loved ones,

Sit down at home and have a tall beer.

The others agreed then

That what I had said

About death had been the best one.

That death was a chapter

Of our life’s book

That we would try and forever shun.

The rest of that night,

The four of us sat in the cold

And made lists of “before I die”.

The ball games we would see,

The children we would have,

The expensive televisions we would have to buy.

That rainy night was the last time

The four of us soldiers

Would ever be seen together.

We would never sit as old men

And talk about the war,

Getting comfy in recliners of leather.

The teacher would die at

The Battle of Kham Duc

The young father outside of My Khe of an illness.

The teenager would get blown up

By a mine in ‘68

His body would lay in the ground then with a stillness.

Now only I remain

Of the group of young men

Who called themselves the Surplus Four.

I married my sweetheart,

I had two lovely kids,

But I now sit, knocking loudly on death’s door.

Vietnam may have claimed

The lives of my friends,

The boogeyman may have taken his prey.

But I know that wherever they are,

They are safe and sound,

Their souls are no longer astray.

I know when I die,

I will go up and away

To my own personal heavenly plane.

I know that I’ll go right back

To that cold, rainy night

And see my fellow soldiers again.
